Health insurance enrollment depends on timing and life events—but you may have more options than you think.

Open Enrollment (Annual Window)

This is the primary period each year when individuals and families can enroll in or change health insurance plans.

• Typically runs November – January (dates may vary by state)
• Coverage usually begins January 1 or the following month
• Ideal for reviewing plans, premiums, and benefits for the coming year

Special Enrollment Periods (Year-Round Access)

You may qualify to enroll outside Open Enrollment if you experience certain life events, including:

• Losing employer coverage
• Moving to a new state or county
• Marriage or divorce
• Birth or adoption of a child
• Turning 26 and leaving a parent’s plan
• Income changes affecting eligibility
   

These events trigger an open window (usually 60 days) to enroll in a new plan.

First - Time Coverage

If you’ve never had insurance before, you can enroll during Open Enrollment or qualify for Special Enrollment depending on your situation.
